Procurement Guide
Evaluating Engravers
There are several factors to consider when evaluating and specifying engravers. This quick reference will help you in the buying process:
Cost
Engraving machines run in cost from around $4,000 to $50,000, depending on application, size, rotary vs. laser, and other considerations. Engravables — blank metals, plastics, and gifts, might require ongoing investment.
Engraving Software
With the exception of a few hand-engraving units, all engraving machines are driven by a computer, which has greatly enhanced speed, productivity, versatility, ease of use, and significantly reduced the number of errors. Many manufacturers turn to 3rd-party drawing applications, like CorelDRAW®, to run their machines. New Hermes has developed software that is designed specifically to address the needs of engraving. GravoStyle, New Hermes’ workhorse application, can run both rotary and laser machines (even connected to the same computer), can import graphics in a number of formats, and features a WYSIWYRE interface – What You See Is What You Really Engrave. Some smaller New Hermes machines include Quick-Click, a scaled-down version of GravoStyle that is amazingly simple to use, yet flexible and robust.
Single-Source Supplier
For many reasons it is best to look for a company that can provide a full range of engraving solutions. New Hermes prides itself on being the only "one-stop shop" for government clients, providing consultation:
- Rotary and laser machines
- Engravable materials
- Fabrication services (pre-cutting materials such as badges)
- Accessories
- Upgrades
- Worldwide base of training and technical services, by the industry’s only team of factory-trained technicians – if an engraving machine fails on a Navy ship docked in Singapore, a New Hermes technical service engineer could be on-site within hours
- Extended warranties and service contracts
- Advanced training: engraving software is relatively easy to learn, but is also rich with features. New Hermes includes initial set-up and orientation in the machine price, and offers on and off-site training programs
